A Community Project Involving the following Programs:

St. Mark's Lutheran Church; Temenos Catholic Worker; First Church of Christ, Scientist; First Unitarian Universalist Church; the Faithful Fools street ministry; and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

Project goals and objectives:

To create and maintain a safe environment where underserved populations can learn skills that will lead to a better quality of life.

Education for the body:  Seniors and our homeless friends and neighbors will use the computer lab to learn about health care and nutrition, to increase their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment and help our homeless friends find information on self help programs that they can utilize to get off the streets.

Education for the mind:  The computers will be used to teach our homeless friends and neighbors job skills, teach resume skills, to teach social and group skills and to help individuals gain the skills needed to complete their GRE and/or enter college or vocational school.  The computers will be used to teach and support the children of the Tutorial Program to help them learn about technology and create fun ways for them to learn.  The computers will give low-income seniors an ability to learn skills needed to find part time job that is not too physically demanding for them.  Additionally we would like to have five computers that include formats for non-English speaking users.  Three computers will have the ability to understand and process information in Asian languages and two computers will have all of its information in Spanish.  We hope these computers will assist individuals who are unable to access and take advantage of other computer facilities.

Activities to support project goals and objectives:

After hiring a 30 hour a week staff person to maintain the computer center, it would be their responsibility to find creative ways to get underserved populations involved in the classes and lab times offered at the computer center.  Our activities would include the following:

Monday: Computer instruction with the seniors.

Tuesday:  Computer instruction with the homeless and hungry.

Wednesday:  Lab time for seniors in the morning.  Lab time for the homeless and hungry in the afternoon.   Computer instruction for the tutorial students at night.

Thursday:  Lab time for the homeless and hungry.

Friday: Lab time for the seniors.

Saturday:  Community lab time (open to the public).

Sunday:  Community lab time (open to the public).
