Adult Education:
Thanksgiving weekend
Advent-wreath-making Workshop
In the Social Hall
Sunday, November 26, 2006 9:30 - 10:30 am

On this holiday weekend, the Adult Education committee encourages
all members and friends to join together in preparing for the season of
Advent. Advent itself is a time of preparation - a time which can be
enriched deeply by the presence of an Advent wreath in the home. To
help the Old First community to take time during the coming season to
stop and contemplate what God is doing in it and through it, we will be
offering a one-Sunday workshop in which participants will make their
own Advent wreaths to take home and use throughout the Advent
season. This is a great opportunity for the young and the old as well as
everyone in between. So mark your calendars and plan to attend this
special time of preparation.

To ensure that we have sufficient supplies, please indicate your interest
in attending this workshop to the church office at 776-5552.

Advent
"I Love to Tell the Story"
Taught by Linda Reyder in the Munro Room
Sundays, December 3 - 17, 2006 9:30 - 10:30 am

For the three Sundays leading up to Christmas Eve, we will gather
together to tell the stories of Advent and Christmas. Drawing on stories
from a variety of sources and time periods, we will see how this season
of the year has been celebrated throughout the ages. Come to hear
stories read, to read some yourselves, and to discuss together their
meaning and uses. We encourage you to take this time during a
typically busy season to slow down and to appreciate what we are really
celebrating - the gift from God of God's very self to creation - as shared
through stories.

Winter Term
"21st Century Spirituality Rooted in the Christian
Tradition" (SP101)

Taught by the Rev. Joan Huff in the Munro Room
Jan. 7, 14, 28, Feb. 4, 11, and 18, 2007 9:30 - 10:30 am

Questions we will explore during our weeks together: Are Christians
being called out of "organized religion" into another form of spirituality?
Why do I hate meditation and other forms of quiet prayer? Has ritual
any place in contemporary spirituality. Opportunities to explore different
prayer forms will be offered according to class interest.

Rev Joan Huff -- graduate of Claremont School of Theology, ordained in
1980, sometime interim pastor, currently parish associate at 7th Avenue
Presbyterian Church and spiritual director, trained at Mercy Center,
Burlingame. Joan is both a widow and a grandmother who is caring for
Tyler Davidson Huff two days a week as he learns to crawl. [Can
cruising the furniture be far behind?]

Spring Term
"Can We Disagree While Telling Stories?" (S104)
Taught by the Rev. Dr. Erwin Barron in the Munro Room
Apr. 15 - Jun. 3, 2007 9:30 - 10:30 am

Controversy abounds within the Church as well as in our society at
large. How can we communicate effectively what we believe about God and
who God calls us to be? We will explore the use of narrative ethics and
how it can help us to better debate the controversial issues we face in the
church and in the world.
